Heavy showers could not dampen the spirit of Gildredge Park Bowls Club on Saturday 1st May. Members lined up with a target of bowling 100 bowls each over 25 ends as part of the national Captain Tom 100 challange, and to support Roller Roy Payton's fund-raising for Dementia UK.
George Murray did a fantastic job in organising the event. George reports "we collectively bowled 2250 bowls, walked 18 kilometres, moved 3.1 tons in weight and played for 91 hours - a great achievement. Thanks to all who participated and to non playing members and friends who donated to Dementia UK. Donations at the event are approaching £500."
To appreciate the physical effort involved, 3.1 tons is equivalent to the weight of two full-grown African hippopotamuses, which is a good comparison given the wet weather!
